It is recomended that you read ALL the tutorial carefully!
1. Install the game
Unrar it, and make sure that you have at least 5 GB free space. Go to where you unpacked it, and there should be a executable file, called setup.bat. Double CENZURAT, press any key and wait for the game to install.
2. Patch the game for non-steam multiplayer
- the latest version is 1.0.2.5, feb. 2011
- download and install 1.0.2.4 Master Update (about 1 GB in size, 1.8 GB installed) Hotfile | H33t Torrent please seed
- download and install 1.0.2.4-1.0.2.5 Update and Standalone 1.0.2.4 v5
3. Enable the console
Options->Keyboard/Mouse->Allow developer console, CENZURAT on enable
4. Change your name
Changing your name via the console using the "name" command doesn't work with the l4d engine, so you will have to edit a file from the actual game folder. Go to the main folder (the one that contains left4dead.exe), there should be a file there named rev.ini. Open it with a text editor and go to line 89. It should look something like this:
Change "Name" into whatever nick you desire and close the file, saving the changes.
5. Enable the captions(optional)
Captions are a very important part of the gameplay especially if you play with no sound as they warn you about what is happening in the game in terms of sounds. So, when the server plays the sound of the horde approaching, in the lower part of the screen the following phrase will appear:
so you will be warned long before the horde gets to you.
To enable captions, go to Options->Audio->Captioning and select Full Captioning
6. Getting online
Getting to play online is quite simple now that you're updated; it can be done through Garena, which is a kind of pseudo-LAN client; in other words playing on Garena is like playing on a world-wide LAN. Download and install Garena from their site and register if you haven't an account already. Log in and CENZURAT the "Game" button on the left. Select your region and a chat room. Now we have to set the executable path. Further down below you have the "Settings" button, press it, browse to the folder that contains l4d.exe, open and then ok. In the "Bootstrap Parameters" box write the following line:
